Substance abuse is common among the homeless which in turn results in addiction and dependence. Depression is also common among the homeless with over 30% attempting suicide. Hopelessness and mental disorders are the most common causes of suicidal thoughts and cases of suicide. The National Coalition for the Homeless gives important statistics that indicate that the percentage of alcoholics is higher among the homeless than in the general population Hunger and undernutrition are a major challenge to the homeless and is often underestimated. Meals consumed by the homeless are deficient in certain nutrients which will eventually have negative impact on their physical and mental health. Infectious diseases are more common among the homeless than in the general population. These include HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis.
